Susanne D. Sartelle, CCE, MLDR

Susanne Sartelle started 21st Century Leadership, LLC in 2008 and enjoys providing leadership consulting services to chambers of commerce, non-profits and communities.  She specializes in leadership assessment and training, community visioning and strategic planning.  She is a trainer and an authorized distributor of Inscape Publishing materials, including the DiSC.® 

She is a frequent speaker for organizations and has even made her way into the pulpit on several occasions as an Advanced Lay Speaker in the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.  She was tapped in 2004 to provide the commencement address for East Carolina University’s School of Communications and was keynote speaker for the Pitt Community College commencement in 2008. 

Sartelle has served five different communities in two states over a 25-plus-year career as a chamber of commerce professional.  She began that career in her hometown at the Conway, S.C. Area Chamber of Commerce during summer break from college in 1983. 

Since graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1984, Sartelle has served chambers of commerce in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and, in North Carolina, the South Brunswick Islands (Shallotte), Jacksonville, and Greenville.  She has been president of the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce since December, 2001.

Sartelle has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism with specialization in public relations from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Arts Degree in Leadership from Bellevue University.  She is also a graduate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institutes for Organization Management.  She earned the prestigious designation of Certified Chamber Executive (CCE) in 2001. 

Sartelle is a former North Carolina Chamber Executive of the Year, and in 2007, was honored as a Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of Coastal Carolina.  That same year, the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce was recognized as one of the top three chambers of its size in the country by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives.  In April 2008, Sartelle was profiled by NC Magazine as one of North Carolina’s Exceptional Women Leaders.  In 2009, the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber was accredited by the U.S. Chamber with 5 stars – a designation only 19 percent of accredited chambers nationwide have received.  In 2011, Sartelle was honored as one of North Carolina’s Women of Achievement by the N.C. General Federation of Woman’s Clubs.

Sartelle is a former president of the Carolinas Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives, having played a significant role in the merging of two state associations into one.  She is a past chairman of the Board of Regents for Charleston Institute, a U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Organization Management, and served on that organization’s National Board of Trustees for three years.  She currently serves on the Board of Regents for Southeast Institute in Athens, Ga., and is also a faculty member.  Sartelle also currently serves as a board member for the American Chamber of Commerce Executives, a national association.
